The goal of the Peer is to assist and support the flight crew members in recognizing, facing and overcoming any obstacle that may adversely affect the performance of their duties. It also supports its colleagues as equals.
The Germanwings incident in March 2015 was so impactful that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) convened a task force. This was stated in Recommendation 6 published in 2016:
The Task Force recommends the implementation of pilot support and reporting systems, linked to the employer’s safety management system in the context of a punitive non-work environment and without compromising the principles of Just Culture. The requirements should be adapted to the different dimensions of the organisation and to the different levels of maturity and should include provisions taking into account the range of working arrangements and types of contracts.
